The first article of interest was published on December 25, and considers the phrase "well regulated Militia", which appears in the Second Amendment language. Obviously, the founding fathers thought regulation was a good thing. But the NRA considers "well regulated" to mean "not regulated". Interesting....
The second article explores an NRA backed law that allowed for citizens to shoot police officers. Apparently, the NRA saw that there was "there was no right to reasonably resist unlawful entry by police officers" and sought to correct the situation.
I think it is time that the NRA was knocked off its high horse and returned to supporting responsible, safe, and regulated use of firearms for hunting and sport shooting. We have to release the grip the organization has on our representatives and remove the lobby interest when we consider what we need in our society, and how we interpret our Bill of Rights.
According to Wikipedia,
There are several versions of the text of the Second Amendment, each with slight capitalization and punctuation differences, found in the official documents surrounding the adoption of the Bill of Rights. One version was passed by the Congress, while another is found in the copies distributed to the States and then ratified by them.
As passed by the Congress:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
The original hand-written copy of the Bill of Rights, approved by the House and Senate, was prepared by scribe William Lambert and resides in the National Archives.
